The best lube for silicone toys (and what to avoid)
Why water-based lube is the best match for silicone toys, and how to avoid damaging them.

The best lube for silicone toys is a water-based lube. Avoid silicone-based lube on silicone toys, and spot test a hybrid first or follow the maker's guidance, because the silicone in it can damage the surface over time.
Silicone is the material most people choose for body-safe toys, and for good reason. It is smooth, non-porous when made well, easy to clean and lasts for years. But there is one mistake that can shorten its life quickly: using the wrong lube. Here is what works, what to avoid and how to check if you are not sure.
The short answer: water-based lube
Water-based lube is the best lube for silicone toys. It is safe with every toy material, including silicone, and it is safe with condoms too. It feels natural, washes off easily with warm water and will not stain your sheets. If a water-based lube starts to feel tacky mid-session, add a little more, or a few drops of water.
For silicone dildos, butt plugs and cock rings, a good water-based lube is all you need. Browse our water-based lube collection to find a texture you like, from thin and silky to thicker gels that stay put.
Why silicone lube can damage silicone toys
It sounds as if silicone and silicone should get along, but they do not always. Silicone-based lube can react with the surface of a silicone toy. Over time that can leave the toy feeling sticky or gummy, look cloudy, or develop a rough, pitted surface.
That matters for more than looks. A damaged surface is harder to clean properly, and small pits can hold on to bacteria. A toy in that state is past its best and is worth replacing.
Not every combination of lube and toy reacts in the same way, which is why you will hear mixed stories. The safe approach is simple: unless the toy maker says otherwise, keep silicone lube away from silicone toys.
What about hybrid lubes?
Hybrid lubes mix water and silicone to give a longer-lasting feel that still washes off fairly easily. Some are marketed as suitable for silicone toys and some are not. Because they do contain silicone, check the label and the maker's guidance before you use one, and try the spot test below first.
The spot test
If you really want to use a silicone or hybrid lube with a silicone toy, test it first.
- Choose an out-of-the-way spot on the toy, such as the base.
- Put a small dab of lube on it and leave it for a few hours, or overnight.
- Wash it off with warm water and mild soap and dry the toy.
- Look and feel. If the spot is sticky, tacky, cloudy, swollen or rougher than the rest of the toy, do not use that lube with it.
A clean result is reassuring, but it is not a guarantee for the long term. Repeated use can still wear the surface. When in doubt, go back to water-based.
What else to avoid
- Oils with latex. Oil-based products such as massage oils, coconut oil and petroleum jelly can weaken latex condoms and make them more likely to fail. Never use them with latex condoms. They can also be hard to wash off toys and fabrics.
- Household products. Hand cream, body lotion and similar products are not made for intimate use and may irritate. Use a proper lube.
- Numbing products for anal play. Numbing lubes can mask discomfort, which is your body's signal to slow down. For comfortable anal play, choose a thicker anal lube and take your time.
When silicone lube is the right choice
Silicone lube is not the enemy. It is long-lasting, great in the shower and perfect with toys made from glass, stainless steel and hard plastic. If you want to use it during toy play, pair it with a glass or metal toy instead of silicone.

Caring for silicone toys
Good lube habits go hand in hand with good cleaning. Wash toys before and after use with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner, rinse well and let them dry fully. Store each toy separately, ideally in a pouch, so different materials do not touch. Our toy care guide has the full routine.
