How to Use a Wand Massager: Settings, Tips and Care
A practical guide to getting the most from a wand massager, from first settings to attachments, charging and cleaning.
Wand massagers have a devoted following for a simple reason: they deliver deep, rumbly vibration over a broad head, which many people find more satisfying than the buzz of a smaller toy. If you have just bought your first wand, or you are wondering whether one is right for you, this guide covers how to get the most from it, from the first switch-on to cleaning up afterwards.
What makes a wand different
A wand is a long handle with a rounded head at one end. The motor sits close to that head, so the vibration spreads across a wide area rather than focusing on a single point. That makes wands great for external stimulation, for all bodies, and they double as genuine muscle massagers for shoulders, back and legs. You will find a full range in our wand vibrators collection.
Start low and build up
Wands are known for their power, and the top settings can feel intense, even numbing, if you go straight to them. The best approach is almost always to begin on the lowest setting and work upwards slowly.
- Steady settings give constant vibration. Use them to warm up and to find the intensity that feels right.
- Pattern settings pulse, wave or escalate. Try them once you are relaxed, as they can add variety or help you tip over the edge.
- Change it up if sensation starts to dull. Dropping a level or switching patterns often brings feeling back faster than going higher.
The number and type of settings depends on the model, so check the product page or the manual that came with yours.
Using a wand: some general tips
There is no wrong way to hold a wand, but a few habits make a big difference.
- Use a layer. If direct contact feels too strong, try it over underwear or a towel. This softens the vibration without losing the depth.
- Move around. Rather than holding it in one spot, try slow circles, gentle pressure and light touches. Explore the surrounding areas as well as the obvious ones.
- Get comfortable. Lying back with a pillow under your knees, or on your front with the wand beneath you, both keep your hands and wrists relaxed during longer sessions.
- Add lube. A little water-based lube makes the head glide smoothly. Water-based lube is safe with every toy material, which is why we recommend it. Browse our water-based lube range.
- Share it. Wands work well with a partner. One of you holds it while the other relaxes, or place it between you during sex for vibration you can both feel.
Attachments
Some wands accept attachments that slip over the head. These change the shape of the stimulation: a finer tip for more focused sensation, a textured cap for a different feel, or a shaped attachment designed for internal use. Only use attachments made for your specific wand, fit them securely before switching on, and follow the maker's guidance on how they should be used. Never use a wand head internally on its own, as it is not designed for that.
Rechargeable or plug-in?
Wands come in two main styles, and each has its fans.
- Rechargeable wands are cordless, so you can move freely, use them anywhere in the house and pack them for travel. Charge fully before the first use, and top up after each session so it is ready next time. Our rechargeable vibrators include cordless options.
- Plug-in wands run from the mains. You never run out of charge mid-session, which some people value above everything else. The trade-off is the cable and needing a socket nearby.
Whichever you choose, use only the charger or lead supplied with the toy, and never charge a wand that is wet.
Cleaning and caring for your wand
Wands are motorised, so they must never be boiled or submerged unless the maker states the toy is fully waterproof. Many wands are splash-resistant rather than waterproof, so it is worth checking.
- Switch off and, for plug-in models, unplug before cleaning.
- Wipe the head with warm water and a mild, unscented soap, or a dedicated toy cleaner.
- Rinse with a damp cloth, taking care to keep water away from charging ports and seams.
- Dry completely with a clean, lint-free towel before storing.
Store your wand somewhere cool and dry, ideally in a pouch or its original box so the head stays clean and dust free. For cleaners and storage, see our toy care range and our full toy care guide.
Is a wand right for you?
If you enjoy strong, broad vibration and mainly external play, a wand is one of the most satisfying toys you can own. If you prefer something smaller and more discreet, a compact vibrator might suit you better. Either way, everything we sell ships from UK stock in plain, unbranded packaging.
