A practical guide to using remote and app-controlled toys to stay close when you live apart.

Distance is hard on any relationship, and the physical side is usually the first thing to suffer. Remote and app-controlled toys give you a way to share something close to touch when you are in different towns, time zones or countries. Here is how they work, what to look for, and how to make the experience feel natural rather than awkward.

How app control works

Most app-controlled toys connect to a phone over Bluetooth. The phone running the app sits near the person using the toy, and the app acts as a bridge. For long-distance play, your partner opens the same app on their own phone and connects to yours over the internet. Their taps, slides and patterns travel to your phone, which passes them on to the toy.

That means there are two links to think about: the short Bluetooth link between your phone and the toy, and the internet link between your phone and your partner's. Many apps also include chat, video calling or pre-set patterns, but features vary a great deal between makers, so read each product description carefully before you buy.

Simpler remote control toys, which use a small handheld remote instead of an app, are brilliant for playing together in the same room or out on a date. They are not designed for long distances, so if you live apart, choose a toy that specifically mentions app or long-distance control. You can browse both kinds in our remote control toys collection.

Getting a good connection

  • Keep your phone close. Bluetooth range is limited, and walls and bodies weaken the signal. Keep the phone on the bedside table rather than in another room.
  • Use a strong internet connection. Wi-Fi is usually steadier than mobile data. If the response feels laggy, a better connection often fixes it.
  • Update the app first. Do it the day before, not five minutes before. Nothing kills the mood like a forced update.
  • Do a test run. Connect, send a few commands and check everything works while you are both fully dressed and relaxed.

Privacy and consent

Handing someone control of your pleasure is an act of trust, and it deserves the same care as any other intimate moment.

  • Agree the rules in advance. Talk about when it is fine to start a session, whether surprise buzzes at work are exciting or off limits, and what signals mean slow down or stop.
  • The person wearing the toy is always in charge. They can switch it off, close the app or end the call at any point, and that should never need explaining.
  • Protect your accounts. Use a strong, unique password for any toy app and turn on extra security if it is offered. Only share control links or codes with your partner.
  • Check the permissions. Look at what the app asks to access on your phone, and read its privacy information so you know what is stored and shared.
  • Be careful with recordings. Never record a video call or screenshot a private moment without clear, enthusiastic agreement.

Choosing a toy type

Start by thinking about who will be using the toy and what they already enjoy.

  • Wearable and couples' toys are designed to be used during play with a partner, and they suit reunions as well as time apart. See our toys for couples.
  • Vibrators in many shapes now come with app control, from small bullets to larger toys. Our vibrators range is a good place to compare.
  • Vibrating butt plugs and prostate toys are popular for longer, hands-free sessions where one partner sets the pace. Browse vibrating butt plugs if that appeals.
  • Vibrating cock rings can add sensation for one or both partners when you are finally together again.

If you are buying as a pair, consider two toys that work with the same app, so each of you can take a turn in control.

Battery and charging

Almost all app-controlled toys are rechargeable. A few habits keep them ready when you need them:

  • Charge fully before the first use, following the maker's instructions.
  • Top up before a planned session, especially if you are in different time zones and will be playing late.
  • Remember your phone needs charge too. Running the app and a video call at the same time uses battery quickly, so keep a charger nearby.
  • Only use the cable supplied with the toy, and never charge a toy while it is wet.
  • If a toy will not be used for a while, give it an occasional top up rather than leaving it fully flat for months.

Make it feel like you

The technology is only half of it. The best long-distance sessions have plenty of conversation, a bit of build-up and room for laughter when the connection drops.

Clean your toy after every use, and pair it with water-based lube, which is safe with every material. Our toy care guide has more tips. Everything ships from UK stock in discreet plain packaging, so a surprise for your partner arrives without giving anything away.
