Silicone vs TPE: which sex toy materials are body-safe?

By the MAW team · 27 September 2026 · 2 min read

Silicone, TPE, glass, steel and PVC compared: which sex toy materials are body-safe, how to clean them and what lasts.

Two toys can look identical and be made of completely different materials. Material decides how safe a toy is, how easy it is to clean and how long it lasts, so it is worth knowing what you are buying.

Porous and non-porous

Non-porous materials have no microscopic holes, so they can be cleaned thoroughly. Porous materials can hold on to bacteria and moisture even after washing. That single difference is why "body-safe" usually means non-porous.

Silicone

Silicone is non-porous, warms to body temperature, is soft yet durable, and lasts for years. It is our first recommendation for anything insertable. Use water-based lube with it, because silicone lube can damage silicone toys. Look for the Silicone tag on our products, or browse silicone dildos and silicone butt plugs.

TPE, TPR and real-feel materials

These soft blends feel skin-like, which is why they are used for realistic toys and strokers. They are porous, so clean them carefully, dry them completely and keep them for your own use. They wear over time and are not meant to last as long as silicone.

Glass and stainless steel

Both are non-porous, very easy to clean and great for temperature play. They are firm and weighty, which many people love. See glass toys and metal and steel toys.

PVC and jelly

Cheap and flexible, but porous and harder to keep clean. If you use them, cover them with a condom and replace them when they start to degrade.

Quick guide

  • Most body-safe: silicone, glass, stainless steel.
  • Lifelike feel: TPE and real-feel, with careful cleaning.
  • Budget: PVC and jelly, with a condom.
